Best Time for the Trek
Best time for making EBC trek is from start of March to mid-May. And also from start of September to mid-November is good time. Traveling in winter is extremely difficult as temperature falls below 0°C, most of the lodges are also closed during this time. Also, traveling in summer isn’t favorable as it becomes hot, wet and the mountains are shadowed by clouds.
Good to Hire Guides and Porters
If you’re trekking through a trek company, most of them provide guide and porters. The cost for guides and porters are very affordable if you book them from Kathmandu. Or you can also hire guides and porters in Lukla and Namche if necessary. It’s not a compulsion but will definitely make your journey flexible and light.
How to Start the Journey for Everest Base Camp Trek?
The journey will be around two weeks. It starts by consulting a travel agency in Kathmandu for convenience and preparing with all gears needed. Then take a flight to Lukla from Kathmandu which will be around 25 minutes. Then prepare with hiking boots as journey on foot starts from Lukla.
In short major places of your journey includes; Lukla to Namche, Namche to Tengboche, Tengboche to Periche, Periche to Lobuche, Lobuche to Goark Shep and finally first Everest Base Camp.
Things to Consider Before Everest Base Camp Trek
- Everest peak can't be seen from EBC, but you can view it from trails on the way. To see the spectacular sunset view on Everest, head towards Kaala Patthar.
Stay healthy and safe: The trekking region is very safe from thieves and any crimes, but always be alert for that too. Important thing is to stay healthy, altitude sickness is most likely to catch you. So the group travel is always safe. Take some important medicines along before the trek. Don’t eat much meat during journey, simple Nepali khana is best for you.
Pack as light as possible: Most of your loads will be carried by your porters, but you will have to take care of your snacks, camera, etc., so pack light for your ease.
- Better to carry Nepali rupess for the trek, as the currency exchange rate on trails is high. Also there are ATMs at very few places.
- Carry battery pack to charge your gadgets, especially camera.
- Don't forget to carry things such as wet pipes, reusable water bottles, sun creams, lip balms and play cards & books (for refreshments on tea houses).
Most importantly enjoy yourself: You will be mesmerized by the natural beauty on the way. More fascinating is local culture and hospitality you’ll get, feel free to involve.
This journey will have maximum activitiy level. During almost 14 days trek, expect a hike upto 4-10 hours a day on moderate steep trails. But the fatigue will all be forgotten once you witness the magical mountains, beautiful valleys, long suspension bridges and the hospitality you get from local people.
Thus it is a once in a lifetime experience.
