UPPER DOLPO TREK
The Upper Dolpo is the remote and hidden valley but much loved destination among the adventure seekers. This far western region between the Tibetan plateau and the Dhaulagiri Himalayan range is one of the Nepal’s tranquil and natural heavens but yet unexplored area. It is the home of herbal land, unspoiled trans-Himalayan culture, Buddhist monuments; unique human civilization at high altitude is worth a visit.
Trekking around the upper Dolpo is an unforgettable journey in every visitor's life. It is also restricted area and opened for trekkers only in the late eighties. Dolpo region protected under Shey Phoksundo National Park covering 3,500 square kilometers of land, mostly above 4,000 meters. It is one the highest inhabited land of the world and the villages in Upper Dolpo are 4,300m and above. The traditions and way of life have remained intact in Dolpo Region since decades. This is only the place that the people still practice the pre-Buddhist Bon Po religion.
In the early 9th century was almost entirely replaced after the Buddhist belief to spread across Tibet. Peter Matheson’s, the snow Leopard and David Snell grove’s Himalayan Pilgrimage have contributed to the mystique and attraction of Dolpo. Shey Gompa, to the north of the Phoksundo Lake and Inner Dolpo was visited by both writters. The first English subtitled movie on Dolpo “The Caravana” or “The Himalaya” of Nepal was a huge success and was nominated for the Oscar Award in the best foreign language film category.
Upper Dolpo is a region of mystical beauty and its remoteness adds to the sense of adventure among its visitors. The Upper Dolpo trekking route passes through beautiful valleys, interesting places, people, gigantic mountains and greenery forest of Pines, Rhododendrons, Oaks etc. Trekkers are enthused greatly about the wild remoteness, the stunning mountain scenery and innocent friendliness peculiar people who live in excessively remote mountainous regions in this trekking route.
The main highlights of the trek is an ancients, spectacular landscapes, the gigantic mountain ranges of Mt. Kanjiroba , Dhaulagiri and Mt. Annapurna, mesmerizing Shey Phoksundo lake, Kang La (5350m) pass, wildlife, isolated villages of Ringmo and the centuries old monasteries. Shey Phoksundo is the deepest lake of world with its 145m depth and Shey Gompa is century's old Buddhist monastery. The wild life includes Musk Deer, Himalayan Blue Sheep and the legendary elusive Snow Leopard. The customs and traditions seems here are quite similar to those of Tibet.
Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival at Kathmandu airport, meet and greeted by office representative, transfer to hotel.
Day 2
Trekking preparation day, sightseeing in and around Kathmandu. Spa retreat at Ananda Natural Therapy Center. Overnight at Hotel
Day 3
In the morning flight, fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj (260m.). Transfer to hotel. Overnight at hotel
Day 4
In the morning flight , fly from Nepalgunj to Juphal which is 45m. Flight. Then trek from Juphal (2475m) to Dunai (2140m) which is 2-3 hours walk. Overnight at Tented camp
Day 5
After breakfast trek from Dunai to Shyanta (2520 m.), it takes about 5-6 hours. Overnight at Tented camp
Day 6
After breakfast trek from Shyants to Somdu (2940 m.), it takes about 6-7 hours. Overnight at Tented camp
Day 7
After breakfast trek from Somdu to Phoksundo (3733m.), it takes about 5-6 hours. Overnight at Tented Camp
Day 8
After breakfast trek from Phoksundo to Sallaghari (3756 m.),it takes about 7-8 hours. Overnight at Tented Camp
Day 9
After breakfast trek from Sallaghari to Yak Kharka (3856 m.),it takes about 7-8 hours. Overnight at Tented Camp
Day 10
After breakfast trek from Yak Kharka to Shey Gompa (4160 m.), it takes about 5-6 hours. Overnight at Tented camp
Day 11
After breakfast trek from Shey Gompa to Saldang(3620m) through Saldang La Pass ( 5200m) , it takes about 8-9 hours. Overnight at Tented camp
Day 12
After breakfast trek from Saldang to Yak Kharka (3965 m.), it takes about 7-8 hours. Overnight at Tented camp
Day 13
After breakfast trek from Yak Kharka to Thaksema (4702 m.) which takes about 6-7 hours. Overnight at Tented camp
Day 14
After breakfast trek from Thaksema to Dhotarap (3944 m.) which takes about 8-9 hours. Overnight at Tented Camp
Day 15
: After breakfast trek from Dhotarap to River side (3756 m.) which takes about 6-7 hours. Overnight at Tented Camp
Day 16
After breakfast trek from River side to Odar (3475 m.) which takes about 6-7 hours. Overnight at Tented Camp
Day 17
After breakfast trek from Odar to Eklebhatti (2970 m.), it takes about 5-6 hours. Overnight at Tented camp
Day 18
After breakfast trek from Eklebhatti to Dunai (2140 m.) which takes about 5-6 hours. Overnight at Tented camp
Day 19
After breakfast trek from Dunai to Juphal (2475 m.) takes about 2-3 hours. Overnight at Tented camp
Day 20
Fly from Juphal to Kathmandu via Nepaljung . Overnight at hotel
Day 21
Free day
Free for shopping , revitalization at Ananda Natural Therapy Center or other activities. Overnight at Tea House.
Day 22
